Why is it important to know your BMI?
Knowing your current BMI is important because it’s an easy way to assess whether your weight is appropriate for your height and whether it poses health risks such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and bone problems. It can also signal when you need to adjust your diet and activity levels, although a doctor’s consultation is always recommended for an accurate health assessment.
How to use the online BMI calculator?
To use the BMI calculator, simply enter your weight and height.
After you enter all the necessary information, you will immediately see the result as a BMI (BMI) score, the corresponding status, and a short description for each status. You can also view more detailed recommendations for each status on optimal weight for a healthy lifestyle.
Important note! For children and adolescents (under 18 years of age), special weight assessment methods (percentiles) are used. For older adults, the BMI is often lower than that of middle-aged people; for example, a BMI of 22-27 (depending on age) may be considered normal.
Why isn’t an online BMI calculator ideal?
The BMI (body mass index) is not perfect because it doesn’t distinguish between fat and muscle, doesn’t take into account fat distribution, gender, age groups, or ethnicity. Because of this, the BMI can sometimes overestimate or underestimate your actual health status and associated risks.
However, the BMI is a useful and excellent tool for quickly assessing your overall weight status. A more accurate assessment requires other parameters, such as body fat percentage, waist circumference, and a general health assessment by a doctor.
Normal weight (BMI 18.5 to 24.9)
Your BMI is within the normal range. This is associated with the lowest risk of chronic diseases.
Overweight (BMI 25.0 to 29.9)
You are overweight. This increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.
Underweight (BMI less than 18.5)
Your BMI is below normal. This may be a sign of health problems or malnutrition.
Obesity (BMI greater than 30.0)
High health risk. It is necessary to urgently consult a specialist to develop a treatment plan.
