Powerlifting is a strength sport, the essence of which is for the athlete to lift the heaviest weight possible. Powerlifting training is aimed at developing strength abilities, strengthening tendons and ligaments and, as a result, building muscle mass

More often than not, this sport attracts men more than women, however, representatives of the fair half of humanity are also successfully involved in powerlifting, taking part in competitions and enjoying training.

This strength movement appeared in the 1940-50s of the last century in Great Britain and America with the aim of participating in competitions and setting records.

About the training

It would seem that powerlifting classes are quite simple: you need to take a heavier barbell and lift it in a certain way. But in reality, an athlete’s training includes many exercises to improve physical fitness. The trainers at the “5 Element” fitness club, specializing in powerlifting, know how to structure a workout in such a way that both beginners and experienced athletes get maximum pleasure from the workouts. Over the past few years, we have developed a special program for training athletes to participate in competitions. And the “5 Element” club can boast of an excellent base for powerlifting in Kyiv.

Who is Powerlifting Training Suitable for?

Practicing this sport includes a whole range of special exercises: gaining muscle mass, pumping up the strength of all muscle groups, developing self-discipline - these are all tasks for a powerlifter. However, if you are interested in this sport, you should pay attention to the following factors:

  • Current health status. We recommend that you get examined by a doctor to avoid problems in the future. Powerlifting should be approached with caution if you have cardiovascular diseases, disorders of the musculoskeletal system, hernias and protrusions, vision diseases (glaucoma, astigmatism, etc.).
  • Powerlifting can be done from 12 to 80 years old by both men and women equally.
  • There are two types of powerlifting: equipped and unequipped. In the first case, you will need special shoes, a belt and other accessories that are necessary for the safety of performing exercises and optimal use of your strength; the second option involves having special clothing for each exercise.
  • If you’re just starting out in a sport like powerlifting, start with light loads. This will allow your body to gradually adapt and develop strength.

What exercises are included in powerlifting?

Powerlifting classes include several mandatory exercises:

  1. squats with a barbell;
  2. bench press in a lying position;
  3. barbell row.

Each of these exercises has standards and requirements for execution technique. Often, a beginner begins training with basic physical training - this is necessary to strengthen the body before high strength loads. After all, in order to master squats with a 50 kg barbell, you need to have strong muscles in the back, hips and buttocks. In addition to basic exercises with light weights, the athlete performs a set of exercises on machines, works with his own weight and, in some cases, includes cardio exercises.
